Ken-O-Sha Park Elementary has seen double-digit growth in reading and math test scores over the last three years. The teachers at Ken-O-Sha Park are committed to student success. In a recent survey, 88% of parents said the school provides their child with additional support when needed.
Parents are their child’s first teacher and Ken-O-Sha Park Elementary recognizes how important it is for parents to be an active part of their child’s education. Ken-O-Sha Park Elementary is proud to have high parent participation rates. On average, 100% of parents participate in parent-teacher conferences. Families also participate in Literacy Nights, Fall and Spring Open Houses, and monthly Pastries with Parents. SAFE AND SECURE
A recent survey showed that 87% of parents feel their student is safe at Ken-O-Sha Park Elementary. Students participate in a program known as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS). Students are recognized for making good choices and showing positive behavior. The number of students being recognized for good behavior at monthly PBIS celebrations has consistently increased, while referrals to the office for behavior issues have steadily decreased.
UNIQUE EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENTS
Students have the opportunity to learn in unique educational environments, including the surrounding park, trail system, rain garden, creek, and prairie.
The City of Grand Rapids will unveil improvements at Ken-O-Sha Park that began in 2020. Improvements include a new natural playscape using recycled fallen trees, new green infrastructure and daylighted stormwater, a nature amplifier along Plaster Creek, a screened portable restroom at the Plaster Creek Trail trailhead, new accessible pathways, and educational and wayfinding signs.
Funding for the project is provided by the parks millage passed in 2013, a Great Urban Parks grant from the National Parks and Recreation Association, and a Connecting Communities to Outdoor Play grant from the National Parks and Recreation Association and the Target Corporation.
