Do I need to submit an online application to work at the Grand Rapids Public Schools?

Yes, only applications submitted through our online application process will be considered.  Please do not send resumes or other application information directly to the human resources department as it will not be considered.

What happens when I apply for a position at Grand Rapids Publics Schools?

Your application is initially screened by the human resources team to verify you meet the minimum qualifications for the position. The hiring manager will make selections for interviews from the list of qualified applicants.

 

Are there any pre-screener tests prior to employment for teachers?

Yes, the Star Teacher Pre-screener Test (Haberman). The Haberman is a cultural competency assessment that is factored into the teacher review and consideration process. As a diverse school, we want to make sure our teachers are successful in engaging and supporting the growth of all our students. The Haberman is only required if a candidate is applying for a teaching position.

 

Are there any pre-screener tests prior to employment for other positions?

Yes, some positions do require testing.

  • If you are applying for a paraprofessional or childcare worker position and you do not have more than 60 college credits, you will be required to take an ETS test. If you have previously taken and passed a work keys test, that can be substituted for the ETS test. ETS means educational testing services, and the ETS test is an assessment that determines your level of reading, writing, and math.
  • If you are applying for a secretarial position, there will be testing for computer skills.
  • If you are applying for a bilingual position, there will be a translation test.

 

If I am qualified for the position, will I get an interview?

As much as we would love to interview every person who meets the minimum qualifications, we do not have the capacity to do so. The hiring manager will typically select two to six qualified candidates to interview per opening.

 

What happens after an interview?

Either a recommendation is made, or the hiring team will request additional interviews. If a recommendation is made by the interview committee, then the candidate will move to the next step in the hiring process, which would be the reference stage.

 

How will I know if I did not receive an interview or was not selected for the position?

The Talent Coordinator will contact you via email on whether or not you have been selected to interview, or if you have not been selected for the position after interviewing.

 

Who is considered as professional references?

References from a current supervisor (if currently employed) and a previous supervisor are required in order to receive an official offer for a position. References from friends, family, and co-workers are not included as professional preferences. We must have at least two completed references. We will NOT contact references until you give us permission; however, the reference stage must be completed to be considered for an offer.

 

Can I apply to more than one position?

Yes, absolutely! Please review the job description to see if you meet the required qualifications and be sure to include supporting documentation (e.g. college transcripts, certifications, workkeys, etc.).

 

Is the posted salary or hourly rate negotiable?

Salary and hourly rates are not negotiable for unionized positions. To find what positions are unionized, please go to the collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) section.
