Over 100 students from a dozen GRPS schools recently had the opportunity to hear from – and sing with – Metropolitan Opera singer Ryan “Speedo” Green, during Green’s appearance at DeVos Performance Hall.

Thanks to donations from Lake Michigan Credit Union and DeVos Hall, the choir students had dinner and heard Green share his story of overcoming formidable odds, in conversation with Daniel Bergner, author of the bestselling biography '“Sing for Your Life: A Story of Race, Music and Family.”

As students were rehearsing, Green came in the room to hear them, then joined them in singing. The impromptu visit, along with Green’s performance in DeVos Hall, was powerful for students, said Maggie Malone, director of fine arts for GRPS: “His story is compelling and gave hope and inspiration to the young people in audience.”
