Science. Technology. Engineering. Math. STEM education is essential to today’s economy, helping students navigate the careers of tomorrow. Ensuring access to STEM experiences for all students will lift up Michigan’s economy and create new opportunity pathways for young people.
FIRST Robotics is a national movement that since 1989 has been inspiring students to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs. In Michigan, Governor Rick Snyder is so committed to the benefits of FIRST Robotics that he invested $2 million in the program. Our state has more FIRST Robotics teams than any other state in the U.S.!
GRPS Superintendent Teresa Weatherall Neal is committed to engage every school in the district in this innovative, amazing program without financial barriers. We can do this together! Grand Rapids can be at the forefront of empowering urban students through STEM experiences with FIRST Robotics.
The West Michigan Center for Arts + Technology (WMCAT) is partnering with GRPS to coordinate a district-wide FIRST Robotics program, including organizing teams, supporting coaches, and overseeing logistics. This coordinated approach ensures sustainability, accessibility and growth of the program. This year we are expanding from 10 to 15 teams!
