Additional Information on Hybrid and Virtual Learning Options

 

Dear Parent/Guardian(s),

We are writing to provide additional information about the hybrid in-person and 100% virtual learning models.

The district has been studying best practices for hybrid in-person models and monitoring districts throughout Kent County and beyond that have already done in-person and/or hybrid learning. 

Hybrid In-Person: The proposed hybrid in-person model provides a minimum of two days of all day in-person instruction to start. The long-term goal is to eventually transition to 100% in accordance with all health and safety guidelines. 

The proposed hybrid in-person model would group students in Cohort A and Cohort B. Cohort A would be in-person on Monday and Tuesday and Cohort B would be in-person on Thursday and Friday. Wednesday would be 100% remote learning and provides for a day of deep cleaning and sanitization. We expect the bell times to be the same as last year. Bell times are available on the district website at www.GRPS.org. Neighborhood and theme school transportation will also be provided for eligible students with strict health and safety protocols implemented. The proposed hybrid in-person plan is not final and is subject to change to best meet the needs of individual schools.

100% Virtual: Students remaining 100% virtual should have the same or similar schedule as they had for the first marking period. 

Staffing: We have not finalized how hybrid in-person vs virtual will be staffed yet and will continue to work with the teachers’ union and individual employees to address concerns. We are prepared to provide special accommodations for staff with pre-existing conditions. All teachers will be GRPS teachers. We are not contracting out hybrid or virtual instructional services.

There will likely be a team of teachers who will be dedicated to the 100% virtual model while others will be part of the hybrid in-person model. Teachers will not be expected to do both. Our goal is to maintain as much continuity of learning for all students during this transition. It is possible that students may have a new teacher as part of this transition in either the hybrid in-person or virtual model.

Health and Safety Measures: GRPS is committed to implementing all COVID-related health and safety measures as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and the Kent County Health Department. The district’s COVID Exposure Control Plan is available at www.GRPS.org/coronavirus

Commitment Form: The reason we have asked parents to complete the commitment form by Monday, September 28 is so we can use the data to drive decision making and finalize plans. Staffing, transportation, food service, and so much more is dependent on knowing how many students are opting for hybrid in-person vs 100% virtual learning. 

We understand that it is difficult to make a “commitment” without all the details. We are asking parents to please use the commitment form as a “preference”. As details of the plans are finalized, parents will have the option to change their preference before the start of the second marking period.

As a reminder, you must log in to your student’s email account and use the link embedded in the email to complete the commitment form. If you have more than one student, you will have to log in separately for each of your students and use the link in each student’s email. The reason you must do this is the links are specifically connected to each individual student account. 

If you are having trouble, you may contact your teacher or the school. Every staff member received a link that they can use to complete the commitment form for you. You may also contact the hotline at 616-301-1111.
