Within the last decade, Michigan has attracted investment from large media companies such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, and Google. Michigan ranks 2nd among Midwestern states in the number of jobs in the digital media industry with approximately 445,000. The digital media industry is expected to add 35,000 jobs by 2022.

In the most recent Talent Assessment and Outlook for the region released by Talent 2025, there was an identified need for more talent. As a result, both locally and nationally, there is an opportunity for GRPS students to pursue lucrative careers. The average salary within the media industry, $51,771, is one of the highest in the region. The academy will be a unique resource for students in the city who want to prepare for a career in television, commercials, radio, movie production, news, or music recording. 

The integrated curriculum, supported by The National Academy Foundation (NAF), will combine principles of media production into the core curriculum:

  • Introduction to Media Communications
  • Digital Media Art and Technology
  • Audio Production
  • Video Production
  • Scriptwriting
  • 3D Modelling & Animation

After graduation, students will have the option of enrolling in one of the quality post-secondary opportunities that exist in the city which include Grand Valley State University Film and Video, Ferris State University Television and Digital Media Production, Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University Digital Art and Design, and Grand Rapids Community College Media Technologies.
