Involvement at City High Middle School includes Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS).
"The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the programme and takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to academic studies."
At the 11th and 12th grade levels it is important for students to complete their hours over a two-year span, so although they may work on hours over the summer it is important that they plan to continue gathering those hours throughout the school year and into the next. Students in grades 6-10 may work on their hours starting in May of the prior school year. There are three deadlines throughout the school year, which are used as check points to facilitate that students are on track for completing their hours.
Each category is defined below with examples of activities that could be placed in each.
Creativity: arts, and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
Examples: Working on the school sustainability musical, sketching and drawing, Learning the cello, piano lessons.
Action: physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle, complementing academic work elsewhere in the Diploma Program.
Examples: Sports teams (GRPS or non-GRPS), yoga class, personal fitness plan, swimming lessons, hiking, rope course
Service: an unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student.
Examples: Tutoring, reading books to kids, river bank clean-up, serving food at a soup kitchen, Cutting your neighbor’s grass
