1834 Brookmoor Ct., NE Grand Rapids, MI 49505
Home Phone: 365-3296
Term 1: July 1, 2010- December 31, 2014
Maureen was born and raised in Grand Rapids, one of seven siblings; she attended catholic schools graduating from Catholic Central High School. She has an Associate Degree from Grand Rapids Community College (then GR Junior College) has a BA and MA from Michigan State University in Special Education in the area of Emotional Impairments. She has many (50+) additional hours in educational administration from MSU, WMU, GVSU and U of M.
Maureen taught students with emotional impairments in the Grand Rapids Public Schools at Oakdale Elementary, St John’s Home and North Park Middle school. She went on as a teacher consultant at the high school level, became a Supervisor and Director of Special Education and finally the Assistant Superintendent for Special Education. After working for GRPS for 21 years, she became the Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and finally the Deputy Superintendent at Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency (KRESA), an Intermediate School District.
Maureen retired from Kalamazoo RESA after 10 years to care for her husband, Charlie Bryant, who was awaiting a heart transplant. He received his new heart in December of 2003. Maureen did volunteer work and was an adjunct instructor at GVSU until a series of strokes left Charlie with a number of disabilities. Maureen then became a 24/7 caregiver, a job as important as any of her other jobs, until Charlie’s death in November of 2009.
Maureen raised her three children as a single, working mom following the death of her first husband, Ray Slade, in 1978. Their daughter, Erin, died in a car accident in 1982. Thankfully, she has two wonderful sons, Mark and Paul and Paul’s wife, Laura, who is a special blessing. Her grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Zachary and Trevor Slade are, of course, the best as is her stepson, Michael Bryant and step granddaughter, Alyssa.
Maureen has spent many years working to eliminate racism wherever it occurs. She has facilitated Healing Racism sessions in schools and at the YWCA in Kalamazoo. She is a past Board Member of Constance Brown Speech and Hearing Center and the Kalamazoo Sunrise Rotary. She currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Advocates for Senior Issues, is a board member of the Ransom Avenue Development, and chairperson of the Hospitality and Social Justice Committees of her church, the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Andrew.
She is particularly dedicated to education and to Grand Rapids Public Schools in particular and considers her work as a board member a continuation of her commitment to students. Maureen currently serves on the Board of Education's Education Committee and is an alternate on the Finance Committee.
