Harrison & Burton Battle for Boys Soccer Championship

Harrison & Burton Battle for Boys Soccer Championship

Thursday afternoon at Harrison Middle School soccer players were excited to have another chance to become Grand Rapids Public Schools champions after a heartbreaking loss in last years championship to SWCC. With an overtime victory over SWCC on Tuesday, the only team remaining was Burton.

Many of the athletes had only heard about the field they were going to be playing on at Houseman. “I heard its 3 times the size any field we have played on all year!” says one student. When arriving to the field lead by Coach Emma and Coach Justin there were thirty other Harrison student athletes there to cheer them on.

At five o’clock the undefeated Wildcats were ready to take the field against the defending champions from Burton. Burton took an early 1-0 lead, but was quickly answered by a long goal by Harrison forward Daniel Santana to tie the game before the half.

After a short half-time break, both teams looked a little tired with limited substitutes and the size of the field. About five minutes into the half Burton again took the lead at 2-1, and it looked like it was going to stay that way. Then with just a few minutes left in the game Harrisons Valentine Morales scored from in front of the net to send the game into overtime.

Neither team was able to score during overtime, which ultimately sent this game into a shoot-out. Harrison went on to make all there shots during the shoot-out to win the Grand Rapids Public Schools soccer championship.
