Girls basketball has come to an end and there was certainly madness in the GRPS Middle School tournament. On Saturday, March 24, Southwest Community Campus rallied the entire game to defeat CA Frost in the Theme School Championship. Next up was Alger going against an undefeated Riverside squad who kept it close until closing minutes when Riverside pulled away to win the Base School Championship. To end Saturday’s championship tournament, SWCC and Riverside battled until the very end with outstanding performances from both sides. It was SWCC who took it all and reigned as City Champions for the 2012 season.
Congratulations to all Theme and Base schools on a successful season, let’s do it again next year!

Riverside and Alger’s girls basketball teams were on fire all night as the game came down to the last two seconds. Riverside 8th grader, Markayla Vander, sunk a free throw to win the game in closing seconds to keep her team undefeated. The team celebrated the win, but it was an effort from all grade levels and both schools that sent everyone home victorious. Riverside will travel down Fuller Ave to take on City Middle on Wednesday at 4:00pm.

A last second three pointer from Riverside’s Ojani Echevarria to win the 8th grade boys basketball game at GR Ford was the icing on the cake after a night of intense match-ups. Ford’s 6th graders scored in sudden-death to beat the Timberwolves while Riverside’s 7th graders put Ford away in overtime. The final game of the night lived up to the excitement as Echevarria sank a three pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining, “That was a moment I will always remember for the rest of my life”, said the 8th grader following the win.
Riverside will host Westwood Wednesday afternoon at 4:00pm.

To celebrate the holiday, Riverside LOOP invited parents to the Daniel E. Nameth gymnasium at Riverside Middle School for a staff vs. student basketball game. Despite a valiant effort from the 7th and 8th grade boys basketball players coming back from a 25 point deficit, a last second three pointer was not enough to conquer the staff. Riverside LOOP Coordinator, Kyle Weld-Wallis, was impressed with the event from all levels, “Parents enjoyed themselves, athletes played hard, and the LOOP students had a blast cheering on their friends. We even got to have a pre-Thanksgiving feast in the cafeteria after the game. We can’t wait to play against the girls basketball team!”
