GVSU Celebrates Girls In Sports – 40th Anniversary of Title IX

For the fourth year in a row, GRPS female middle school students were invited to celebrate National Girls in Sports Day at Grand Valley State University. This year’s event was well attended by female GRPS student-athletes, coaches, parents and athletic directors. GRPS students participated in a variety of sport clinics including basketball, tennis, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, track and field, and competitive cheer and dance.

After participation in a combination of three different sports clinics, athletes attended an NCAA II women’s volleyball game between the Lakers and Walsh College. Students were also provided a pizza dinner and an autograph session with the coaches and players.

This event is not only a great opportunity for students, but coaches and parents as well. Three workshops were held to provide coaches and parents useful information as it relates to the health, mental state and physical conditioning of their female student athletes. Attendees truly appreciate these informational sessions put on by GVSU faculty and staff as they raise awareness to issues and topics that coaches don’t always think about.

A special thank you is sent out to the GVSU Athletics Department, Women’s Center and Movement Science Department for putting on this awesome event. GRPS is honored to be included and is already looking forward to next year!
