Middle School Winter Season Finals

Middle School Winter Season Finals

The middle school boys basketball season ended this past weekend (1/19) with some amazing tournament games. Sherwood Park put up a good fight against the undefeated UPrep/Montessori Panthers but fell short in the fourth quarter by a few buckets. The final score was 46-35. Huge rivals GR Ford and Alger battled next in the base school championship. After losing to Alger two times during the regular season, Coach Lawrence Hodges and his players had enough. They came out strong in the first half and continued to stay in control through the second. Despite a strong run in the fourth quarter by Alger, GR Ford won with a final score of 34-31.

GR Ford went on to play the undefeated UPrep/Montessori Panthers in the city-wide championship later in the day and won their first ever boys basketball championship title. Ford won 43-37 in the finals.

Sherwood Park’s 6th graders, led by sport pioneer Rose Enders, cheered their way to first place. City Middle, coached by Kim Jenerou took home the 7th/8th grade title for the first time in school history.

Lady Redhawks win Back to Back

Posted on 29 October 2012.

The Lady Redhawks of Westwood Middle School have proven themselves to be one of the toughest volleyball teams in the city. Saturday they defeated the Cougars of CA Frost in the finals to win the middle school tournament two years in a row! The 8th grade team went completely undefeated in match play during the regular season and only dropped one set at the tournament. This is a program that has spent a lot of dedication and time in the gym to make themselves successful. The  Lady Redhawks are coached last year and this year by Mrs. Duwanikia Hill.

Burton defeated Riverside in the finals of the silver bracket division to take home the silver trophy.

Congratulations to all teams who participated on a great season. Special thank you and shout out to all the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other friends and family who supported their student-athlete this fall!

GVSU Celebrates Girls In Sports – 40th Anniversary of Title IX

GVSU Celebrates Girls In Sports – 40th Anniversary of Title IX

Posted on 24 September 2012.

For the fourth year in a row, GRPS female middle school students were invited to celebrate National Girls in Sports Day at Grand Valley State University. This year’s event was well attended by female GRPS student-athletes, coaches, parents and athletic directors. GRPS students participated in a variety of sport clinics including basketball, tennis, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, lacrosse, track and field, and competitive cheer and dance.

After participation in a combination of three different sports clinics, athletes attended an NCAA II women’s volleyball game between the Lakers and Walsh College. Students were also provided a pizza dinner and an autograph session with the coaches and players.

This event is not only a great opportunity for students, but coaches and parents as well. Three workshops were held to provide coaches and parents useful information as it relates to the health, mental state and physical conditioning of their female student athletes. Attendees truly appreciate these informational sessions put on by GVSU faculty and staff as they raise awareness to issues and topics that coaches don’t always think about.

A special thank you is sent out to the GVSU Athletics Department, Women’s Center and Movement Science Department for putting on this awesome event. GRPS is honored to be included and is already looking forward to next year!

SpringHill Camp Fun!

Posted on 18 June 2012.

Currently 75 GRPS middle school student-athletes are attending SpringHill Camp in Evart, MI. The camp has many different activities that are providing educational and exciting opportunities for our student-athletes! The students were hand selected to attend the camp by their athletic directors. Athletic directors chose student-athletes that demonstrated high levels of leadership, responsibility and hard work ethics. They earned the right to be at camp and we hope they are having a BLAST!

The pictures below are being sent daily this week from our chaperones at camp. Check them out!
